December always invites reflection, and this year has given me plenty to think about. Our family’s journey through 2024 has been filled with changes, challenges and lessons that have left a lasting mark on my heart.
Changes and Challenges
Farming has always been a family affair. It’s more than just a job—it’s a lifestyle that binds generations together. This year, that connection was tested in ways we never anticipated. Early in the year, my father-in-law, the patriarch of our family, was diagnosed with cancer. It’s the kind of news that stops you in your tracks, making you reevaluate everything.
For decades, he has been the steady hand guiding our farm, the voice of wisdom in every decision, and the anchor that keeps us grounded. His diagnosis forced us all to step into new roles and responsibilities, learning to fill his shoes in ways we weren’t prepared for. My husband and I found ourselves managing not only our day-to-day tasks but also making decisions that felt heavier than ever.
At the same time, I started a new role at the hospital where I work as a nurse. Balancing my career with my duties on the ranch, all while helping my family navigate this unexpected journey, felt overwhelming at times. There were late nights, early mornings and moments of doubt. But through it all, I found a strength I didn’t know I had—a strength rooted in the love of family and the resilience farming teaches us.
Lessons in Gratitude
This year also brought new lessons about gratitude. When life feels chaotic, it’s easy to focus on what’s going wrong. But in the quiet moments, I’ve come to appreciate the simple, beautiful things: a warm meal shared around the table, the laughter of our children playing in the yard, and the unyielding support of our community.
I’ve learned to be thankful for each day we have with our loved ones. Watching my father-in-law face his diagnosis with courage and grace has reminded me how precious life truly is. His strength has inspired all of us to keep going, even on the hardest days.
The farm, too, has been a source of comfort. Something is grounding about the rhythm of the seasons, the way life continues despite the challenges we face. The calving season came and went, the crops grew and were harvested and the cattle were cared for—all reminders that even in uncertainty, life moves forward.
The Power of Connection
As I reflect on this year, I’m reminded of the power of connection. Farming connects us not only to the land but also to the people who depend on us. Every steak on a plate or burger on a grill represents the hard work, dedication and love poured into our operation. This year has deepened my appreciation for the work we do and the trust consumers place in us.
To those of you reading this, thank you for supporting families like mine. Your choice to buy locally, to learn about where your food comes from and to value the stories behind it makes all the difference.
As we look to a new year, I’m carrying forward the lessons of 2024: resilience, gratitude and the importance of cherishing every moment with those we love. From our family to yours, we wish you a holiday season filled with joy, peace and connection.
Thank you for being part of our story.
