Farmers Markets: A Farmer’s Perspective

By CommonGround Nebraska Volunteer Jordan Classen

There’s something special about shaking hands with the people who feed you. As a Nebraska rancher and owner of a beef to consumer business, selling our homegrown beef at farmer’s markets isn’t just about the sale, it’s about connection.

When we arrive at a local market, we’re not just setting up a booth, we’re bringing a piece of our ranch with us. From conversations about how our cattle are raised to sharing our family’s story, farmer’s markets give people a chance to understand exactly where their food comes from, and why that matters.

Supporting Local

“Supporting local” at the market means your food has traveled fewer miles, was raised with care and helps keep family farms like ours thriving. Every purchase supports more than just dinner, it supports our herd, our land and our Nebraska way of life.

But beyond economics, farmer’s markets are just plain fun. There’s a special buzz in the air: kids snacking on kettle corn, neighbors catching up and live music drifting through the stalls. It’s a slice of small-town life where everyone is welcome.

One of our favorite parts? Hearing your questions, “how are your cattle raised?” or “what’s the best way to cook a rump roast?” We love talking shop, and we love seeing folks light up when they sample our beef sticks or jerky. That moment when someone tastes the difference. It never gets old.

If you’ve never been to a farmers’ market, we hope you’ll check one out. Not just for the food or handmade goods, but for the experience. It’s where relationships grow, just like crops in the field. And for us farmers, it’s a reminder of why we do what we do.
